System Software :
A system software is 'background' software that helps the computer to including the operating system, utilities, translators, device drives etc.
The system software is installed in computer when we install operating system. It consists of all the software language and documentation supplied by manufacturer with the computer which allow the user to communicate with the computer and to write or devloped its own program. The computer manufacturer usually supplies this software.
Operating system :
The operating system is the most important program that runs on a computer. It works as a mediator between hardware, application system and user. Operating systems manage the computers processes functioning as an interface, connecting user with the application software and the hardware. The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorised users do not access the system. It makes computer work properly.
Some most popular operating system are MS DOS, MS Windows (Window 95, Windows 98, Window XP, Window vista, Window 7, Window Server 2008 R2), Unix, Linux and Mac OS X etc.
MS DOS (MS = Microsoft) :
It was the main operating system of Microsoft installed in personal computers. It's most important version is 7.0 It is simple non graphical command line operating system.
MS Windows :
It is a series of operating system of Microsoft installed in personal computers. It's most recent client version and windows server 2008 R2 is most recent server version MS Windows.
UNIX :
It is a computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT & T employees at Bell labs including Ken Thompson, Denis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas Mcllory and Joe Ossana. Unix operating systems are widely used in both servers and workstation. First time it was written in assembly language but in 1973 it was rewritten in C programming language. It was designed to be portable, multi-tasking and multiuser in a time sharing configuration.
Linux :
It is the Unix like operating system based on the Linux-kernel. The name Linux comes from the Linux-kernel, originally written in 1991 by Linux Thorvald. This operating system is predominantly know for its use in servers.
Utilities :
It is also called as service program. It is a small operating program which provides a useful service to the user and inhances the capabilities of operating system. These are pre written program, usually by the manufacturer and supplied with the system. It performs a very specific task, usually related to managing system resources and tells the computer how to use its components. These are mainly used in data based management system to manipulate data and printout result. Utility program also available to check whether the file to be read by the computer is virus free or not.

Nortan utility :
Nortan utility supplied with the computer is used to do some specific task such as formating the disc and repairing the disc if something is gone wrong while writing the files.
Disc formating :
It is a process of preparing a hard or other storage medium for use according to operating system including settings up an empty file system.
Disc cleaner :
It is a computer maintenance utility designed to free up disc space space on a computers hard drive. The utility first searches and analyzes the hard drive for files that are no longer of any use and then it removes the unnecessary files.
Disc compression :
By compressing all the information, it increases the amount of information that can be stored on a hard disc. A disc compression utility works automatically and the user doesn't need to be aware of its existence.
Backup program :
It is a computer program, used to a perform a complete copy or backup of a file and data etc. The full backup program enable a user to make an exact dublicate of everything contained on the original source or Computer system in the event of disaster.
Virus scanner :
It is also called as as 'anti-virus', used to prevent, detect and remove computer viruses, worms, adware, spyware and other types of malware.
